THE SENATE ELECTED A NEW COMPOSITION OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT
On August 24, the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan elected a new composition of the Constitutional Court of the country.
The members of the Constitutional Court are Askarjon Gafurov, Fayzulla Kayumov, Bakhtiyor Miralimov, Bakhtiyar Mirbabayev, Genjemurat Pirjanov and Qahramon Uljayev.
On the same day, the Constitutional Court elected Bakhtiyar Mirbabayev as the chaiman and Askarjon Gafurov as deputy chairman.
The Constitutional Court reviews cases on the constitutionality of acts of legislative and executive power. Its is elected by the Senate on the recommendation of the President from among the experts in politics and law recommended by the Supreme Judicial Council of Uzbekistan, including a representative from Karakalpakstan.
The powers of the previous composition of the Constitutional Court were terminated after the entry into force on June 1 of the Law on Amendments to the Constitution (Articles 80, 93, 108 and 109) aimed at strengthening the independence of the Constitutional Court.
